Suleman Shahis a freelance writer and researcher.
He has collaborated with MNS University of Agriculture in Multan, Pakistan, and Texas A&M University (USA).
His principal research interest is plant sciences, and he has contributed to this area by publishing his findings in peer-reviewed publications and presenting his findings at several conferences.
Shah feels that Open Access is transforming publishing and advancing research in all sectors.
Shah’s experience and views about Open Access and research publication are described in this article.

Research Interests

Shah has major research interests in the study of Plant Sciences.
Plant sciences is the scientific study of plants in all their forms and interactions.
Plant scientists are interested in how plants are utilized to create food, transform habitats, repair damaged landscapes, promote human healthand well-being, improve communal surroundings, and give recreational and practical advantages to the public.
The scientific community may help evidence-based policymaking by measuring agriculture's sensitivity to climate changeand anticipating results under various prospective agricultural adaptation and mitigation methods.
A plant scientist might help increase agricultural yields, minimize chemical fertilizers and pesticides, improve crop resistance to climate change, reduce postharvest losses, and provide nutritious meals.

Open Access Role In Disseminating Knowledge

Open access (OA) refers to everyone having open access to information and unfettered usage of electronic resources.
Texts and data, as well as software, music, video, and multi-media, may all be OA. While most are text-only, an increasing number combine text with graphics, data, and executable code.
Non-scholarly material, such as music, movies, and books, may also be covered by OA.
By open access to literature, we mean its free availability on the public internet, allowing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, with no financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those inherent in gaining access to the internet itself.
A publication is deemed open access if Its content is universally and freely accessible, at no cost to the reader, via the Internet or otherwise; the author or copyright owner irrevocably grants to all users, for an indefinite period, the right to use, copy, or distribute the article, provided proper attribution is provided.
It is deposited in full and in a suitable electronic form immediately in at least one widely and internationally recognized open access repository committed to open access.
Shah stated that many big publishers had gradually shifted from the conventional publication model to open access.
This transition has removed financial barriers between the research and readers and ultimately increased citation and the research impact.
The success of Open Access growthis evident from the fact that the overall contribution of Open Access to the publication industry increased from 36% in 2010 to 71% in 2020.

Major Challenge To Research

Dissemination and communication of research findings are essential components of every detailed research.
The dissemination of research results is a crucial aspect of the research process because it allows the advantages to be passed on to other researchers, professional practitioners, and the general public.
Publicly funded research endeavors are seldom deemed accomplished unless the findings are broadly disseminated.
Effective distribution and communication are essential to ensure that the research has a social, political, or economic effect.
They direct governments' and stakeholders' attention to research findings and conclusions, increasing their visibility, understanding, and implementation.
The financial barrier has become one of the biggest challenges to research due to the increasing cost of publication and the subscription model that most journal publishers follow.

Final Words

Shah’s experience with big Open Excess publishers like Springers, Frontiers, MDPI, etc., testified to his belief in Open Access as a barrier-removing mechanism between researchers and the readers of their research.
Shah believes that Open Access is revolutionizing the publication processand benefitting research in all fields.
