Bets on football, horse racing, and greyhound racing were restricted by decree during the first three years of a five-year pilot program that legalized sports betting in Vietnam in 2017. This was similar to a three-year pilot program that legalized gambling in select casinos.
To avoid prosecution, Vietnamese gamblers must avoid major leagues like the English Premier League and Spain's La Liga and instead place their money on foreign events sanctioned by FIFA.
VietnamNet reports that the Ministry had issued a regulation legalizing 27 new football leagues and tournaments. It also allowed for wagering on Vietnam-related events including the U-20 World Cup and the World Cup qualifiers for the national football team.
