Gillian Anderson was born on August 9, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois. Her father, Edward Anderson, ran a business that helped finish making movies. Her parents moved to Puerto Rico for 15 months and then to London so that her father could go to the London Film School.
She was raised in the Crouch End neighborhood of north London and went to Coleridge Primary School. She was 11 when her family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, after moving back to the United States. They kept a flat in London and went there during the summers.
After his family moved back to the United States, Anderson went through a rebellious phase as a teen. He stole small things and dated men much older than him, among other things. At age 14, he was sent to therapy. Anderson went to The Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago after he graduated from high school.
In 1990, he got his Bachelor of Fine Arts there. She took part in a summer program at Cornell University put on by the National Theatre of Great Britain. She worked at the Goose Island Brewpub in Chicago so she could pay for school.
